PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A new report from ShareThis shows the amount of content people shared with friends, family and colleagues via Pinterest and LinkedIn grew faster in Q3 than on Facebook, Twitter and email. Pinterest sharing grew 19.2 percent while LinkedIn increased 15.1 percent. Twitter declined 7.6 percent and Facebook showed moderate growth at 14.7 percent over the same period.
The data is part of the new quarterly Consumer Sharing Trends Report from ShareThis that analyzes consumer sharing behavior across more than 120 social channels, reaching 95 percent of the U.S. internet population on desktop and mobile devices. Additional findings from the report include:
- Pinterest and email are neck-and-neck for sharing content online: In August and September, Pinterest came close to overtaking email as the third most popular sharing channel overall. Sharing through email has decreased by three percent year-to-date.
- LinkedIn isn’t far behind: LinkedIn saw 15.1 percent growth in the third quarter and comes in as the fifth most popular channel for sharing online.
- Facebook and Twitter still dominate, but growth is slowing: While Twitter and Facebook represent nearly 75 percent of all sharing, Twitter declined 7.6 percent, compared to Pinterest, which grew 19.2 percent.
“When people think about how consumers engage with each other and brands online, they often consider two channels: Facebook and Twitter. This could be a critical mistake for brands trying to reach consumers at the right place and the right time,” said Kurt Abrahamson, CEO of ShareThis. “Our report offers insight into the nuanced and fluid trends with fast-growing players like Pinterest and LinkedIn. The more advertisers understand how consumers are using all social channels - beyond Facebook and Twitter - the more effectively they can use social media to augment and improve campaigns.”
The quarterly Consumer Sharing Trends Report measures millions of shares per month across nearly every social channel to derive valuable information about consumer sharing behavior. As the top platform for distributed content according to comScore, ShareThis is uniquely positioned to track and measure sharing across the open web.
