TAINAN, Taiwan--(BUSINESS WIRE)--“We try to transfer the knowledge of THESEUS project and those things we did at the European coast to see if it is transferrable for the Taiwanese coasts,” said Nino Ohle, a hydrology expert from Germany, who was invited by National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) to present his research at EU FP7 THESEUS - Taiwan Workshop 2013.
The workshop was held at the 3F Meeting room at Zenda Suites, NCKU, Tainan, Taiwan, September 24, with six scientists and scholars from Europe including Germany, Holland, Russia, Italy, and four experts from the research institutes in Taiwan.
“It’s interesting for the university to know what is discovered and researched in Europe and what can be used in the Taiwanese coasts,” said Wout De Vries, senior advisor Flood defense, Infram, Holland.
He also said, “The objective of the workshop is to have a look at how we can understand what is happening in the coast, not only from engineering point of view but from ecological point of view, and from social and economic point of view as well.”
“This is trying to integrate the knowledge of all disciplines and to this kind of decision support system,” De Vries added.
THESEUS (Innovation technologies for safer European coasts in a changing climate) is funded by the European Commission and involves 31 institutional partners and NCKU is the only academic institute in Taiwan, according to Ching-Jer Huang, the general chair of the workshop.
“An international platform for exchanging experiences among the partners and presenting the achievements of the project to the end-users of THESEUS is provided here,” said Huang.
Ohle, the leader Hydrological consulting of Hamburg Port Authority- HPA, noted that the research partners in this project try to transfer the things they did at the European coast to look if it is transferrable for the Taiwanese coasts.
“We made some investigations, for example, about artificial measures like sand banks at the European coasts.”
Ohle also mentioned the interest from European Union and said, “From looking outside, I understood that the European Union also wants to have an interconnection between European research and research in other countries.”
A total of ten technical papers were presented by the scientists from Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Russia and Taiwan.
