Edinburgh Second Most Expensive Destination in Europe, Survey Shows

LONDON--()--Edinburgh is Europe's second most expensive summer destination, based on its cost of lodging. That’s according to a new survey from Cheaprooms.co.uk. The survey compared hotel rates for all important European destinations during the month of August, the continent’s main summer vacation month.

In Edinburgh, travelers had to pay an average of 157 Euros per night, and that was for the most affordable double room. It bears adding that only such hotels rated 3 stars or higher were considered by the survey.

Only Formentera, one of the Baleraic Islands, was even more expensive than the Scottish capital. At an average price tag of 175 Euros per night, this small island located six kilometers south of Ibiza was clearly Europe's priciest summer destination in 2013.

Two German destinations followed in the survey’s third and fourth slots. Coming in number three and four most expensive respectively were Sylt, the northernmost island in Germany, and Heringsdorf, a popular seaside resort close to the Polish border. Rates of 154 Euros and 147 Euros for their most affordable double room positioned these two cities in the top five.

The following table shows the 10 most expensive summer destinations in Europe. The prices shown reflect the average daily rate for each destination's cheapest available double room (minimum: 3-star hotel) for the time period spanning August 1st through the 31st.
