Stone.is Uses OnApp CDN to Host Websites for the Record-Breaking Tomorrowland Festival

One Million Fans from 214 Countries Pre-Registered for 180,000 Tickets, Which Sold Out in One Second; Tomorrowland Websites Used 46 Locations from OnApp's CDN Federation to Ensure Zero Downtime

LONDON--()--OnApp has announced the successful deployment of OnApp CDN to host websites for Tomorrowland, a huge electronic dance music festival taking place this weekend in Boom, Belgium. Tomorrowland turned to local hosting provider, Stone.is, to create a global hosting platform for its customer information, ticket pre-registration and ticket activation websites. Stone.is used 46 locations from OnApp's federated CDN to ensure zero downtime when tickets went on sale, in spite of the popularity of the festival, which broke its own record for the fastest ever ticket sell-out.

This year, one million fans from 214 countries pre-registered for 180,000 Tomorrowland tickets, a more global audience than attended the Olympic Games. When ticket sales opened a total of two million customers were forwarded to Tomorrowland’s ticket system via websites hosted by Stone.is. When the queue was processed, the festival sold out in less than one second. On the international ticket sales day, Stone.is served 4.6 million web pages with a peak of 1.4 million page views in just one hour. OnApp's federated CDN, and the website optimization services provided by Stone.is, ensured Tomorrowland had the global coverage to provide zero website downtime and a great user experience for its customers.

"OnApp's federated CDN is the only way we could provide enough global capacity for this size event,” said Stein Van Stichel, Founder and CEO of Stone.is. “We optimized Tomorrowland’s sites to ensure there were no issues with the registration and activation process, and worked with OnApp to ensure we had the global coverage we needed. Using OnApp CDN, we could distribute Tomorrowland traffic from cities all over the world for the launch, and scale back when ticket sales closed. With access to capacity from the OnApp federation, we can design hosting packages for high availability and high load, and guarantee uptime for global brands like Tomorrowland.”

The Tomorrowland experience is coming to the U.S. on September 27 with the Tomorrowworld festival, which takes place in Chattahoochee Hills, South Fulton, Atlanta. The Stone.is hosting platform, featuring OnApp CDN, will also be used for the Tomorrowworld websites. Tickets and more information are available at http://www.tomorrowworld.com.

OnApp's federated CDN makes it easy for service providers to put their customers' websites, video and applications close to end users. The OnApp federation offers more than 170 points of presence and the potential to add capacity from the 2,000+ OnApp clouds deployed to date across 87 countries. By making these locations available on demand, with no tie-ins, OnApp CDN offers instant scale for Internet events, promotions and launches, and provides a more flexible and affordable alternative to legacy content delivery networks. Service providers can choose any mix of locations, right down to the city, and pay only for the capacity they need – without the tie-ins and bandwidth commitments required by legacy CDN vendors.

"Tomorrowland is a great example of federated CDN in action," said Kosten Metreweli, OnApp's Chief Commercial Officer. "Using the OnApp federation means any business with a global audience can turn to a local provider for a close-touch service, with proper SLAs and support, and still get access to as much global capacity as they need. And, for service providers, it opens up a whole range of new hosting products and revenue streams that are easy to take to market with no CAPEX – whether it's a straightforward content acceleration service, or a full-scale, application-delivery platform. With OnApp, you don't have to be big to be global."

OnApp’s federated CDN was also used recently for the Miss Universe Organization website. More information and video about the Tomorrowland and Miss Universe projects is available at http://onapp.com/blog/article/tomorrowland-miss-universe.
