Toshiba Enters Desktop Virtualization Market

New Hosted Virtual Desktop Service Offering Will Provide Reduced Capital Expenses, Enhanced Security and Support for Enterprise BYOD Initiatives

IRVINE, Calif.--()--Toshiba’s Digital Products Division (DPD), a division of Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., today announced its plans to enter the enterprise virtualization market with the new Toshiba Virtual Desktop Service. The service, hosted completely in Toshiba secure data centers, will enable mid-market and enterprise companies of any size to deploy virtual desktops with reduced capital expenses, enhanced security, and support for Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) initiatives.

“Today’s organizations have an ever-growing need to secure corporate data, while controlling capital expenses – finding the right balance can be a challenge,” said Scott Sims, Vice President of Cloud Solutions & Engineering, Toshiba America Information Systems, Digital Products Division. “That’s why more and more organizations are choosing to implement hosted virtual desktops – like the Toshiba Virtual Desktop Service – as the smarter alternative to expensive on-premise solutions.”

Toshiba has partnered with virtualization industry leaders Citrix and VMware to provide a service that allows Windows operating system and other software traditionally located on individual PCs to be installed, stored, run and managed on servers in secure Toshiba data centers. Because software is streamed to client devices as needed through the Internet, each application becomes an on-demand service that’s centrally managed, highly available, secure and up-to-date.

“As the industry leader in virtualization, VMware is pleased that Toshiba has recognized the importance of the desktop virtualization market, and has elected to partner with VMware. We look forward to continuing to support their efforts,” said Erik Frieberg, vice president, Product Marketing, End-User Computing, VMware.

Reduced Capital Expenses

The Toshiba Virtual Desktop Service will eliminate the need to invest in and manage costly data center hardware, removing costly barriers to entry and allowing businesses of any size to capitalize on the benefits of desktop virtualization.

Employee Mobility and BYOD Support

The Toshiba Virtual Desktop Service will allow mobile workers to securely access company data from any Internet-enabled device. With support for most client operating systems – including Windows, Linux, Android and iOS – and Toshiba’s propriety hybrid storage system that provides optimal performance, the service will enable organizations and employees to tap into the productivity and efficiency gains of a BYOD program.

“More and more organizations are adopting desktop virtualization to enable BYOD and mobile workstyles initiatives for their employees. Toshiba Virtual Desktop Service using Citrix XenDesktop provides organizations with a complete solution to mobilize Windows apps and desktops on any device,” said Calvin Hsu, vice president of product marketing, Desktops and Apps at Citrix.

As a global innovator, leading storage provider and laptop pioneer for over a quarter century, Toshiba offers the expertise and secure data center infrastructure to host, manage and deliver virtual desktops for in-office employees and mobile workers. Building on its robust hardware offering, Toshiba has made significant data center investments to host data safely and securely.
