BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Schwartz Center Rounds®, a program that helps healthcare providers process the difficult psychosocial issues they face in caring for patients and their families, has reached a milestone: more than 300 facilities across the country and in England now host them.
“As medicine has become increasingly time-pressured, technology-focused and cost-conscious, doctors, nurses and other caregivers are craving connection not only with each other but also with the reasons they were initially drawn to medicine,” said Julie Rosen, executive director of the Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare, the national nonprofit membership organization that developed and runs the Rounds program. “Schwartz Center Rounds are an antidote to widespread burnout, and our exponential growth attests to this.” More than 30 healthcare organizations have begun holding Schwartz Center Rounds since the beginning of the year.
Unlike traditional medical rounds, Schwartz Center Rounds provide an opportunity for caregivers to share their experiences, thoughts and feelings on a range of topics drawn from actual patient cases. The principle is that caregivers are better able to make personal connections with patients, families, and colleagues when they have greater insight into their own feelings.
From its modest beginnings as a pilot program in 1997 at Massachusetts General Hospital, where founder Ken Schwartz was treated for cancer, Rounds are now held at:
- 13 of 17 U.S. News & World Report “Honor Roll” hospitals
- 7 of 12 U.S. News & World Report “Best Children’s Hospitals”
- 91 Nursing Magnet hospitals
- 26 National Cancer Institute cancer center hospitals
Schwartz Center Rounds are conducted at academic medical centers and community hospitals, outpatient practices, nursing homes, home care and hospice organizations, and health plans. Rounds have become a central part of England’s strategy to create a more compassionate healthcare system. Over the next two years, Rounds will be implemented in dozens of hospitals in the UK, funded by the National Health Service, and eventually offered to hundreds more.
