Roy Morgan Research Measures Real-Time Audience Reactions with Kaazing

Second screen mobile application collects and quantifies TV viewer reactions in less than two seconds

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--()--Kaazing, the leading provider of live web and mobile communication and authors of HTML5 WebSocket, today announced that Roy Morgan Research, Australia’s oldest and most established market research company, is now utilizing Kaazing’s web communications technology to help unlock network communications for its Reactor second screen mobile application, which measures and collects real-time audience reactions for visual analysis and presentation.

The Reactor is an advanced suite of research tools for measuring respondents’ real-time responses to programs, events, advertisements and concepts. Instead of filling out a questionnaire, participants simply download the app and drag the Reactor slider-bar on their computer or mobile device to score a TV show. Viewer reactions are averaged and graphed in real-time and can be selected and displayed on the live program as part of a second screen experience.

During the development process for Reactor, Roy Morgan tried several open-source applications to deliver their results showing an audience’s visual reaction in real-time. In most cases, their team struggled with poor user experience, latency, inability to scale and lack of security. Few options on the market had those built-in enterprise requirements for both native and hybrid HTML5 applications.

“Long-polling is just not real-time and we needed less than two-second response times to be collected, consolidated displayed in summary to our clients,” said Grant Rhys-Jones, Technical Product Owner, Reactor Suite, Roy Morgan Research. “We tried many different options including WebSocket, SocketIO, and NodeJS but could never get them to work. It was seriously painful and didn’t work in all mobile scenarios.”

“Then we downloaded Kaazing and it just worked across all mobile operating systems,” said Rhys-Jones. “We got it up and running immediately in our Windows environment. Kaazing offered the ideal enterprise solution that was not only cost-effective but easy to develop, offering security, reliability, scalability, and true real-time delivery.”

Participants using Reactor connect using an HTML5 hybrid or native app and log their results. The application records all responses - up to four times per second - which are available instantly, with all summary data delivered by Kaazing in a web interface. Using Kaazing’s cloud offering all of the Reactor data is consolidated and made instantaneously available to researchers.

Unlike the competition, only Kaazing offered the ability to work across all browsers and devices, including the two mobile operating systems that Reactor runs on: Droid and iOS. Kaazing’s gateways also offered different enterprise capabilities like authentication, authorization, and message control which addressed key security concerns for the Roy Morgan team.

“We are happy to support the innovative team at Roy Morgan Research,” said John Donnelly III, Executive Vice President, Kaazing. “Bringing real-time analytics and results to the media and entertainment producers and broadcasters and their advertisers using second screen mobile technology and the cloud is the new next generation of research. We look forward to continuing our work with them in this exciting field.”

While the Reactor is a development of the famous 'Worm', a market analysis research tool developed by Roy Morgan Research decades ago to graph viewers’ reactions to political debates, the Mobile Reactor App will be used primarily for entertainment to add a component of interactivity to live TV.

The Roy Morgan Mobile Reactor app is available for both Apple and Android devices. The app is available for free download from the iTunes App Store and Google Play.
