Easy Solutions for Common Air Conditioning Problems

American Home Shield Videos Offer Helpful Tips to Beat the Heat This Summer

MEMPHIS, Tenn.--()--American Home Shield, the nation’s leading provider of home protection plans, is urging homeowners to prevent potential air conditioning problems this summer by taking a few simple precautions, which can be found on the company’s “Home Matters” YouTube video series.

American Home Shield’s YouTube video series features David Leon, a licensed contractor and home improvement television host, and is geared toward helping homeowners with preventive maintenance tips and do-it-yourself fixes for common problems.

In the “Air Conditioning Troubleshooting Tips” video, Leon offers the following advice for getting the most out of an air conditioner in the summer months:

  • When your air conditioner just isn’t making the air cold enough:
    • Go outside and make sure that the condensing unit is clear of leaves, branches and any other obstructions that could be limiting or interfering with the airflow.
    • Clean or replace the air filter.
    • Check the suction line, which is the large line on the unit, and secure the insulation firmly or replace any worn insulation.
    • Consider creating shade for the condenser unit by installing trees or shrubs, but allow enough room around the unit for sufficient airflow.
  • If you notice water leaking into the ceilings or walls: Check the system’s drain line to make sure that it isn’t restricted so that condensation can drain freely.
  • If you hear your air conditioner constantly cycling on and off: The evaporator unit and fan may need cleaning by a qualified professional.

“In the past five years, our customers have placed more than 4 million air conditioning service requests, and these videos capture many of the questions and maintenance issues that our contractors and service team encounter on a regular basis,” said American Home Shield Vice President Dave Quandt.

In addition to the do-it-yourself tips, Quandt stresses the importance of having your air conditioner professionally serviced each year. “A professional preventative maintenance contract is one of the best investments you can make in keeping your systems running as efficiently and as long as possible,” he said.
