WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The 2013 BIO World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology this June 16-19 in Montreal, Canada at the Palais des congrès de Montréal will mark the event’s 10th anniversary. Beginning in 2003, this unique conference has established itself at the world’s largest industrial biotechnology event for business leaders, investors, and policy makers in biofuels, biobased products, and renewable chemicals. The goal in conducting the annual conference is to link agriculture, chemistry and biotechnology to facilitate the formation of new commercial value chains.
“During the 10 years BIO has held this conference we’ve witnessed an explosion of innovation led by industrial biotech companies,” said Brent Erickson, executive vice president of BIO’s Industrial & Environmental Section. “A growing biobased economy can strengthen the nation’s economic security and enhance energy security reducing dependence on foreign oil and also benefitting consumers by revitalizing manufacturing and creating new opportunities for agriculture, generating jobs, and making cleaner products and processes.”
BIO has created a picture book, “Visible Progress in Commercialization of Advanced Biofuels, Biobased Products and Renewable Chemicals,” showcasing biorefineries across the United States including commercial facilities that have been in operation for as many as 10 years and new ones under construction. It also shows demonstration and pilot biorefineries that are scaling up innovative processes. These biorefineries are producing new employment opportunities and jump-starting economic development when they’re needed most. BIO also created the George Washington Carver Award for Innovation in Industrial Biotechnology that will be awarded to Dr. Jay Keasling this year during the BIO World Congress. Dr. Keasling is a professor of biochemical engineering at University of California, Berkeley and associate laboratory director at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
The plenary sessions and breakout program for the 2013 World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology will showcase the strides industrial biotechnology has made toward commercialization and the ways consumers benefit. Everyday products derived from biotechnology give consumers products with qualities they increasingly demand such as renewable ingredients, enhanced performance qualities or environmental benefits.
