Cintas Document Management Recycles One Million Pounds of Paper During 2013 Shred USA® Earth Day Events

Over one million pounds of paper were recycled, saving 12,000 trees

CINCINNATI--()--In recognition of Earth Day, celebrated today, Cintas Corporation (NASDAQ: CTAS), a leader in secure document management services, announced it recycled over one million pounds of paper during its free Shred USA® Earth Day events throughout the U.S. from April 19-21. The total resulted in more than 12,000 trees being saved. This removes 2.8 million pounds of greenhouse gases, or the equivalent of taking 254 cars off the road per year.

“Shredding documents is key in reducing the risk of identity theft, a growing threat for individuals and businesses across the nation,” explained John Otten, Marketing Manager, Cintas Document Management. “The Shred USA® events are a great benefit for the communities we serve because the public can safely dispose of confidential information while conserving natural resources, saving energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”

Participants around the country brought sensitive documents to more than 100 events at local banks, credit unions and hospitals. All documents were shredded using the Cintas SmartShred™ process. With this system, paper is collected and securely destroyed using one of Cintas’ mobile shredding trucks. Once shredded, the paper is delivered to a paper mill where the shredded paper is turned into pulp and manufactured into secondary paper products.

Additional savings from the nationwide events included over 16 million BTUs, the equivalent of heating 179 homes per year; nearly 14,000 pounds of hazardous air pollutants; 960,000 pounds of solid waste, the equivalent of 34 trash trucks; and over 11 million gallons of water, the equivalent of 17 swimming pools.

By hosting a SmartShred™ event with Cintas, businesses are able to provide an added-value for their customers as well as the community.
