CEA Provides Tips to Live Green, Buy Green, Recycle Responsibly This Earth Day

CEA, GreenerGadgets.org offer consumer tips for Earth Day and every day

ARLINGTON, Va.--()--In anticipation of Earth Day on Monday, April 22, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® has tips for Americans to Live Green, Buy Green and Recycle Responsibly.

  • Live Green Tip: Research shows that the more consumers know about their energy use, the less energy they’re likely to consume, and the more likely they are to save. Use the Consumer Electronics Energy Calculator to estimate the amount of energy your consumer electronics use in your home based on the products you have and the amount of time they are used. The calculator then determines your energy cost per month and per year, and also compares your use to that of the average U.S. household.
  • Buy Green Tip: Buy and use ENERGY STAR certified electronics. These products provide the same functionality as other electronics but use less energy because they are more efficient. EPEAT is another certification that looks at even more environmental aspects of products.
  • Recycle Responsibly Tip: Use CEA’s electronics recycling locator tool to find responsible recycling locations in your area. Put in your zip code and see nearby drop-off locations. Our electronics recycling locator tool lists only third-party, certified recyclers, so rest assured your gadget will be recycled safely.

“CEA wants to help Americans celebrate Earth Day, and GreenerGadgets.org can show you how. You can recycle an old TV, use an ENERGY STAR-certified device, or just unplug a device you’re not using,” said Samantha Nevels, coordinator of environmental policy communications at CEA.

In honor of Earth Day, CEA will give away new green gadgets to two lucky winners. To enter the #CEAGreen Earth Day contest, consumers can submit pictures of themselves being green or of their green gadgets by posting them to Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #CEAGreen between April 15 and 26. Prizes include a 39-inch Samsung LED TV or a Nest home energy system.

CEA and the consumer electronics (CE) industry are committed to being green through energy efficient products and commitments, and by encouraging and facilitating electronics recycling. This past December, CEA, the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) and 15 industry-leading video providers and device manufacturers signed an unprecedented Set-Top Box Energy Conservation Agreement that will result in annual residential electricity savings of $1.5 billion or more. As part of an effort to increase the amount of electronics recycled, CEA and the CE industry have created the eCycling Leadership Initiative to: improve consumer awareness of collection sites; increase the amount of electronics recycled responsibly; increase the number of collection opportunities available; and to recycle one billion pounds of electronics annually by 2016. In the first two years since the Initiative was established, the number of pounds of CE goods recycled by the industry has nearly doubled.

Consumers can visit GreenerGadgets.org year-round for the most exciting developments in eco-friendly electronics and more tips on how to Live Green, Buy Green, and Recycle Responsibly.
