Coachella Valley Online Students Take Real-World Field Trips to La Brea Tar Pits, San Diego Harbor

Trips Offer Juan Bautista de Anza Online Charter School Students Enrichment, Socialization Opportunities

SALTON CITY, Calif.--()--While many schools are cutting hands-on learning opportunities due to budget constraints, Juan Bautista de Anza Online Charter School (JBDA), a tuition-free public school serving middle and high school students from the Coachella Valley to the Mexican border, has scheduled more than 15 field trips this spring. A comprehensive middle and high school program, Juan Bautista de Anza uses a blended educational model that combines a standards-based online curriculum with one-on-one teacher support from on-site instructors at learning centers in Salton City and San Marcos.

“At JBDA, we complement our academic program with a variety of enrichment opportunities, including service learning projects, an equine leadership program and field trips,” said Dr. Sandra Thorpe, executive director. “When aligned with the school curriculum, field trips allow students to apply what they’ve learned and help reinforce key concepts. Such experiential learning opportunities give our online students and teachers a chance to form personal connections face to face.”

Planned field trips for spring 2013 include a photo tour of Borrego Springs, an outing to the Page Museum and La Brea Tar Pits, and a visit to the Maritime Museum of San Diego and boat ride around San Diego Harbor. JBDA students also participate in the school’s Horse Wisdom equine leadership program, held twice monthly at Smoketree Arabian Ranch in Borrego Springs, Calif. All field trips are free and leave from the school’s learning centers.

Juan Bautista de Anza offers a California State Standards-based curriculum with more than 150 core, Advanced Placement and elective courses. Courses are delivered completely online and available anywhere with a computer and an Internet connection. Students complete their schoolwork remotely at a location of their choice or on-site at a JBDA learning center. Students receive personalized support and instruction from state-credentialed teachers who hold bachelor’s or master's degrees in their subject area and have significant online and traditional classroom experience.

Juan Bautista de Anza is ideal for many students, including advanced learners, those living in remote locations, students needing a flexible schedule in order to work or pursue outside interests, or those who are behind and need to catch up. The school is made possible by nationally recognized online learning provider Advanced Academics, which supplies its learning management system, online curriculum and highly-qualified, California-credentialed online teachers.

JBDA is open to students in San Diego, Orange, Riverside and Imperial counties and is currently accepting applications for the 2013-14 school year. Students and parents can learn more at the following information sessions:
