WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Airlines for America® (A4A), the industry trade organization for the leading U.S. airlines, released it’s bracket for the 2013 NCAA® March Madness® tournament, noting that no matter which team ends up the champion, with a NextGen modernized air traffic control system in place, we all win.
“Thousands will fly into Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport®, the world’s busiest airport, to cheer on their favorite teams during this year’s ‘Final Four,’” said Jean Medina, Senior Vice President, Communications at Airlines for America. “With NextGen technologies in place, customers could get there even faster and with fewer delays.”
Delays cost airlines and their customers $31 billion every year. That's because the U.S. air traffic control system today uses ground-based technology that dates back to the 1950s and does not enable planes to fly as directly and efficiently as they otherwise could.
Implementing new policies and procedures would enable airlines to use technology investments they have already made and would reduce flight delays, missed connections and cancellations, while also lowering fuel consumption and related emissions – a triple double if ever we saw one!
More can still be done to improve the customer experience and reduce the airline industry’s environmental footprint by implementing a National Airline Policy that supports a modernized air traffic control system.
