SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Spirent Communications, the leading provider of navigation, positioning and wireless test solutions, today announced that the European Space Agency (ESA) has selected Spirent’s Hybrid Location Technology Solution (HLTS) to expand the location testing capabilities in their R&D labs.
As the first test solution of its kind, Spirent’s HLTS brings together all elements of hybrid positioning technology synchronously. It enables ESA to test positioning performance with a combination of Assisted Global Navigation Satellite System (A-GNSS), Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) sensor and cellular positioning technologies. ESA’s initial use of HLTS is to test OTDOA (Observed Time Difference of Arrival), a cellular technology that enables accurate positioning indoors. HLTS provides the ability to test OTDOA performance metrics in the lab and assesses the technology’s accuracy under a wide range of conditions, including various combinations of PRS bandwidth, muting patterns and impairments such as multipath and fading.
“Spirent navigation and positioning systems have been a big part of our R&D efforts over the years,” said Massimo Crisci, Head of Radio Navigation Systems and Techniques Section of the Technical Directorate in ESA/ESTEC. “HLTS is a unique and powerful test platform that delivers repeatable and reliable lab-based testing while combining the key positioning technologies.”
“We’re excited that ESA continues to employ Spirent’s location technology solutions in their leading-edge R&D initiatives,” said Spirent vice-president Nigel Wright. “The collaboration between our companies demonstrates our joint commitment to lead and accelerate the development of next-generation location technologies for the wireless industry.”

About European Space Agency
The European Space Agency (ESA) is Europe’s gateway to space. ESA is an intergovernmental organisation, created in 1975, with the mission to shape the development of Europe’s space capability and ensure that investment in space delivers benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world.
ESA has 20 Member States: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, of whom 18 are Member States of the EU. ESA has Cooperation Agreements with eight other Member States of the EU and is discussing an Agreement with the one remaining (Bulgaria). Canada takes part in some ESA programmes under a Cooperation Agreement.
By coordinating the financial and intellectual resources of its members, ESA can undertake programmes and activities far beyond the scope of any single European country.
ESA develops the launchers, spacecraft and ground facilities needed to keep Europe at the forefront of global space activities.
Today, it launches satellites for Earth observation, navigation, telecommunications and astronomy, sends probes to the far reaches of the Solar System and cooperates in the human exploration of space. Learn more at www.esa.int
