SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--David Goodyear, P.E., S.E., T.Y. Lin International Senior Vice President and Chief Bridge Engineer, was recently elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). Election to the NAE is considered among the highest and most exclusive professional distinctions that can be awarded an engineer in the United States. Goodyear, who is one of only 69 new American members elected from a highly-competitive field of over 500 nominations, was cited “for leadership in concrete segmental, cable-stayed, and hybrid bridge design and construction.” His induction into the Academy will take place October 6-7, 2013 at the 2013 NAE Annual Meeting at the National Academy of Sciences Building in Washington, DC.
Throughout his distinguished career of 36 years, Goodyear has been a pioneer in the design of record-setting bridges and new methodologies for bridge construction engineering. He was the Chief Bridge Engineer for the 1,900-foot-long Hoover Dam Bypass/Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge. This multi award-winning bridge is the highest and longest concrete arch in the Western Hemisphere and the second-highest bridge of any kind in the U.S., featuring the tallest concrete segmental columns of any bridge in the world. Goodyear also designed the new 10-lane Port Mann Bridge in Vancouver, BC, which is the second longest cable-stayed span in the Western Hemisphere and the widest bridge in the world. In addition, Goodyear is Chief Bridge Engineer for the design of the 1,720-foot-long Willamette River Transit Bridge in Portland, OR. This unique cable-stayed bridge, which will carry no private vehicles, will ultimately be the nation’s largest transit bridge for only light rail trains, buses, bicycles, pedestrians and eventually streetcars.
Goodyear continues to advance the field of civil and structural engineering with his development of bridge design codes and standards, innovations in bridge design and engineering, and professional leadership. He was the 2012 recipient of the Post-Tensioning Institute (PTI) Fellow Award for his outstanding contributions to the post-tensioning industry and significant contributions to PTI committees. A Charter Member and recent Chairman of the PTI Committee on Cable-Stayed Bridges, Goodyear was the author of the original PTI Provisions for fabricated strand stay cable erection and corrosion protection provisions. His development of erection-to-grade for cable-stayed bridges is now one of the most common and successful erection engineering methodologies for cable-stayed bridges. He was also a member of the PTI ad-hoc committee that developed the original American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Guide Specifications for concrete segmental bridges, and was the first to apply these specifications to concrete segmental arch structures such as the Crooked River and Hoover Dam Bypass bridges.
With his 2013 election, Goodyear joins T.Y. Lin International Chairman of the Board, Dr. Man-Chung Tang (elected in 1995), and Company founder, Dr. T.Y. Lin (elected in 1967), as a member of the NAE.
