AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Electronic Design magazine has named Freescale Semiconductor’s QorIQ Qonverge base station-on-chip portfolio as one of the best embedded processing products of 2012 for the wireless communications space. QorIQ Qonverge products – the industry’s premier multimode wireless base station processor family that scales from small to large cells with a common architecture – began shipping earlier this year.
Each year, Electronic Design’s staff editors choose the best technologies and products among those introduced and covered in the magazine during the previous 12 months. This year’s winners are recognized in Electronic Design’s annual Best Electronic Design edition published earlier this month.
“Last year, Freescale sparked transformation within the wireless infrastructure space with the introduction of the market-defining QorIQ Qonverge portfolio,” said Stephen Turnbull, senior product manager of Wireless Solutions for Freescale’s Digital Networking Group. “Today QorIQ Qonverge is the only base station-on-chip portfolio receiving this prestigious award, underscoring Freescale’s exceptional innovation and leadership.”
Freescale’s QorIQ Qonverge portfolio provides an outstanding solution to the wireless industry’s challenge of cost-effectively handling exploding demand for high-speed wireless bandwidth and data access. The QorIQ Qonverge series is a highly integrated base station-on-chip portfolio built on advanced heterogeneous multicore technology. It is the first scalable family of products sharing the same architecture to address multi-standard requirements spanning the base station range from macrocells and metrocells to home/office femtocells.
“We rely on the expertise of our staff and contributing editors to ferret out the ‘best’ of the various new technologies, products, and standards that we have seen and written about throughout the past year,” said Joe Desposito, editor-in-chief for Electronic Design magazine. “These guys are in the trenches every day covering this industry, and they know about all the great new innovations that have been introduced and what really works.”
The QorIQ Qonverge portfolio’s flagship part is the B4860 macrocell system-on-chip. Introduced earlier this year, the product is designed to help mobile operators accommodate rapid adoption of 4G data-centric wireless devices, while reducing costs associated with 3G deployments. The B4860 delivers optimal performance for macrocell base station applications, while the small cell QorIQ Qonverge BSC9131/32 products offer compelling value propositions for residential/enterprise multimode solutions.
