NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Univision News’ award-winning anchors of “Noticiero Univision,” Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas, were honored with the reputable Lifetime Achievement Award, the first Hispanics to receive this recognition in the News and Documentary category, from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). The 33rd Annual News and Documentary Emmy® Awards were presented during a ceremony last night at the Time Warner Center in New York City.
This recognition, awarded each year, is one of the most distinguished honors in the broadcast news industry recognizing the very best news reporters and documentary films aired on national television or streamed over the Internet.
Both Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas began their careers at the Univision Los Angeles flagship station, KMEX, and have covered all of the major national and international news stories for the past 25 years. They have interviewed every sitting U.S. President since George H.W. Bush as well as dozens of Latin American political figures. In 2012, Ramos and Salinas made history by co-hosting Univision Network’s “Meet the Candidates” events marking the first time during the general election that presidential candidates address Hispanic Americans.
In addition to serving as co-anchor of “Noticiero Univision,” (Univision News) Jorge Ramos hosts “Al Punto,” (To The Point) Univision’s weekly public affairs program, offering in-depth analysis of the week’s top stories and exclusive interviews with newsmakers. He writes a weekly column that is published in more than 40 newspapers across the country and Latin America, provides radio commentary for Univision Radio, and is the author of 10 books and bestsellers, most recently “A Country For All: An Immigrant Manifesto” (Vintage/Random House 2010). Ramos has received numerous awards including the Maria Moors Cabot Award presented by the Columbia University Journalism School, and eight Emmy® Awards.
Maria Elena Salinas, recipient of four Emmy® Awards, also co-hosts newsmagazine “Aqui y Ahora,” (Here and Now) and serves as a radio analyst on relevant issues for Hispanic America. She is one of the few Latino syndicated columnists in the United States, being published in both Spanish and English, as well as on Univision.com and her own website MariaESalinas.com. Salinas published her memoir in 2006 entitled “I Am My Father’s Daughter: Living a Life without Secrets”, which became a best seller for Spanish Language books.
“Noticiero Univision” is the most watched Spanish language newscast in the U.S., reaching 96 percent of Hispanic Americans living in the United States averaging nearly two million viewers every night. In addition to Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from NATAS, “Noticiero Univision” is the only Spanish-language newscast honored with the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award as well as other national Emmy® Awards.
