New Research Reveals That Men Are Significantly More Eco-Friendly Commuters Than Women in the USA

Washington, D.C. Tops the Charts for “Greenest” Commuters

NEW YORK--()--BikeGuard™ releases a map today of American bicycle commuters, showing new insights on America’s cyclists and commuters. It reveals by US state who’s the most green and who’s the most mean to the planet.

The map looks at the 731, 268 people who commute on bikes nationwide. It uncovers which states have the highest and lowest number of bike commuters and registrants, how many women or men bike to work, and which state ranks for the most funding allocated to cycling projects.

Key findings of cycle statistics by state:

  • Highest percentage of bicycle commuters: Washington, D.C., at 3.13 percent.
  • Lowest percentage of commuters: Arkansas, at .06 percent.
  • More men than women commuted to work by bike. 74 percent of bike commuters nationally are male, in contrast to a tiny 26 percent who are female.
  • Highest amount of funding per capita for bike projects: Alaska, at $18.79.
  • Lowest funding amount: Maryland, at $.45 per person.

Rivka Fogel, creator of BikeGuard™, said, “We’re really surprised to see some of these findings. We’ve been hearing about the relatively few women biking to work, but seeing it reflected in hard numbers is a different thing entirely. Then again, based in New York as we are, it’s always interesting to see a state like Idaho being so progressive, with numbers that point to an even ratio for cycle commuting across the genders.”
