Philadelphia Federal Credit Union Seeks Local 3rd-5th Grade Students for Art Competition; Winners Receive School Supplies for Entire Classroom

Artwork to illustrate children’s dreams for the future and emphasize the importance of beginning to save money at an early age

PHILADELPHIA--()--Philadelphia Federal Credit Union (PFCU) today announced an art competition that will challenge students to submit a work of art that depicts their “dream” and then describe how they plan to save enough money to make that dream possible. Open to Philadelphia-area 3rd, 4th and 5th graders, PFCU’s “Back-to-Savings Art Contest” is designed to teach children the importance of saving money at a young age. Winners of the contest will receive school supplies for their entire classroom ($250 value) along with a personal $100 savings account. The deadline to submit entries is October 19, 2012.

“Parents understand that saving can be difficult, and the goal of this contest is to provide children with a lesson that good financial planning habits begin when you’re young,” said Dominique Jenkins, Financial Educator at Philadelphia Federal Credit Union. “If we focus on making the idea of saving money fun at first, we’ll be in a much better position to introduce more sophisticated saving strategies later in life. Young people tend to be very visual learners, and we hope that by combining art and finance we’ll be able to instill a sense of responsibility that will serve them well as they get older.”

All Philadelphia-area students in grades 3-5 are eligible to participate, regardless of membership at PFCU. Once all entries are submitted on October 19, 2012, a special committee will select three finalists in two separate categories – (1) the children of PFCU members/non-members, and (2) the children of PFCU employees. On November 1, 2012, the artwork from the six finalists will be posted on the PFCU website for the public to vote on through November 15, 2012. The winner in each category will be announced on November 16, 2012, on PFCU’s Facebook page.

“We’ve been an active participant in the Philadelphia area for more than 60 years and are proud of the work we’ve done to impact the local community,” said James McAneney, President and CEO of Philadelphia Federal Credit Union. “This contest will not only teach young people valuable life-changing skills, it will also help support the Philadelphia area school systems by providing supplies to two lucky winners’ classrooms. As we view the artwork, we can’t help but be reminded that the future of our community is literally in the hands of our children and we can’t wait to see what they create.”
