DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/fmcmrn/telecoms_and_techn) has announced the addition of the "Telecoms and Technology Report Ireland" report to their offering.
Growth in the (still small) domestic Irish telecommunications market was particularly strong in the decade and a half to 2008, as population and income levels grew fast compared with those of other OECD countries. Since then, the economy has been gripped by a recession that has been far deeper and more prolonged than in most other OECD countries.
The former state-owned monopoly, Eircom, remains the largest player in the fixed-line market, although other licensed operators have been increasing their share. The dominance of the two largest mobile operators, Vodafone and O2, has diminished since Eircom purchased the third-largest mobile operator, Meteor, in 2005.
Boosting competition in the telecoms sector has been the government's key policy objective since liberalisation. This has involved taking an increasingly strong line in imposing competitive practices on Eircom, which has been accused repeatedly of delaying the introduction of full competition in the fixed-line and Internet markets, where it retains a dominant position. At end-March 2012, Eircom's share of fixed-line revenue was 54%.
