DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/jh74gq/country_report_ven) has announced the addition of the "Country Report Venezuela" report to their offering.
On August 5th the president of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, announced that the ruling Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela (PSUV) candidate for governor of Carabobo state will be Francisco Ameliach.
The announcement took place at a campaign rally in Venezuela's third-largest city, Valencia (the capital of the state of Carabobo), which has traditionally been an opposition stronghold. Its current governor is Henrique Salas Feo, the son of the politician that Mr Chavez defeated in the 1998 presidential election. Carabobo is one of the country's most populous and industrialised states, and as such is an important political battleground for both the upcoming presidential election (October 7th) and regional elections (December 16th).
Although Mr Chavez had originally announced that he would back the relatively moderate minister for foreign affairs, Nicolas Maduro, to challenge Mr Salas in the December vote, he later backtracked, with local analysts suggesting that the president was searching for a candidate with closer ideological ties. As a former army major who took part in Mr Chavez's failed coup in 1992, Mr Ameliach has been a close ally of the president and fits the bill in terms of profile (mainly unquestionable loyalty). However, local Chavista organisations appeared disappointed in the wake of the announcement, as they had been pushing for the candidacy of the popular local mayor of Puerto Cabello (also in Carabobo), Rafael Lacava. In fact, Mr Ameliach had already been twice defeated by Mr Lacava in internal PSUV polls in the state and looks to be a weak contender.
