NEC's NeoFace Facial Recognition Technology Delivers ‘Best-in-Class’ Performance in Latest NIST Testing

IRVING, Texas--()--NEC Corporation of America (NEC), a leading provider and integrator of advanced communication, biometrics and IT solutions, announced that NeoFace, NEC’s facial recognition technology, achieved the highest ranking in JPEG Compression, JPEG Compression with Inter-eye Distance Reduction, JPEG 2000 Compression and JPEG 2000 Compression with Inter-eye Distance Reduction investigations performed by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and released in NIST’s Interagency Report - NISTIR 7830 - Performance of Face Recognition Algorithms on Compressed Images.

Following the NIST 2010 Multiple Biometric Evaluation (MBE) testing, when NEC NeoFace’s algorithm demonstrated the fastest matching speed, the most-recent tests (http://www.nist.gov/itl/iad/ig/mbe.cfm) conclusively demonstrate superior performance of NEC NeoFace technology in dealing with real-world, highly compressed images to as low as 2,000 bytes, and inter-eye distance of as low as 24 pixels.

“NEC NeoFace technology’s strength lies in its tolerance of poor quality, highly compressed surveillance videos and images, previously considered of little to no value, leading to higher rate of positive identification,” stated Raffie Beroukhim, vice president of NEC’s Biometrics Solutions Division. “While searching of latent (scene of crime) fingerprints is the norm, NEC NeoFace facial recognition technology can now positively identify latent photos with high degree of accuracy.”

Since the 1970s NEC has invested significant resources in the research and development of its biometric identification technologies, and has consistently achieved world-leading results in independent, third-party testing. These latest test results re-confirm NEC's superior matching capabilities within the world of face recognition. NEC's facial recognition technologies have been adopted globally for law enforcement applications, immigration systems, and amusement parks.

Results shown from the Multiple Biometric Evaluation 2010 and the 2011 follow-up study do not constitute endorsement of any particular product by the U.S. Government.
