Research and Markets: Methanol Industry in Argentina - Industry Expected to witness an Increase in the coming Decade

DUBLIN--()--Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/7hbv8m/methanol_industry) has announced the addition of the "Methanol Industry in Argentina" report to their offering.

Argentina's methanol market accounted for over 15% share of the region's methanol demand. Argentina's share of methanol demand will be affected by the higher methanol growth rates expected in Mexico and Brazil. Meanwhile, Argentina's share in the region's methanol consumption is expected to witness an increase in the coming decade.

Argentina is one of the major consumers of methanol in the South and Central American region.

Methanol market is witnessing a booming revival of demand due to a number of factors. On one hand the automobile and construction applications are expanding in volume after the downward slide of the activity in these fields during the recession. On the other hand the methanol market is largely driven by new-age technologies - the demand from DME, LPG, fuel cells and alternative fuels is increasing along with the vigorous spread of these industries.

Repsol YPF, S.A. and Celulosa Arauco y Constituicion SA are the top two players in the market. To date, Argentine methanol is exported in its entirety and has met with success, becoming one of the largest exporters in the world. Experiments are on to develop methanol converters where methanol formed will be removed to shift the equilibrium favorably. Liquid phase methanol process to utilize un-shifted carbon monoxide rich feed gas from coal gasification has been quite a success. As reformer represents nearly 30-35% of cost of the project, work is intense in this field to develop radically new reformer technology. The modern trend is towards the steam reforming of natural gas followed by auto-thermal reforming (mainly for large plant) so as to produce a stoichiometric gas and hence minimize feed consumption. The catalyst used in the original high pressure process was based upon zinc oxide and chromium oxide. This catalyst is activated at high temperature and consequently high pressure is required for favorable equilibrium.
