East Meets West as First-Time Delegation of Chinese Endocrinologists Adds to the International Attendance at the AACE Annual Scientific and Clinical Congress

PHILADELPHIA--()--Today, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) welcomes a delegation of endocrinologists from China to its 21st Annual Scientific and Clinical Congress in Philadelphia May 23-27. It is the first time a group of endocrinologists from the world’s most populous nation has visited this AACE event. The Chinese physicians will attend lectures and events, review industry exhibits, meet with AACE leadership and examine the methods and practices of AACE members.

“The duel-threat epidemics of diabetes and obesity are not exclusive to the Unites States. In fact, treatment of all endocrine conditions is a worldwide issue,” said AACE President Dr. Yehuda Handelsman, MD, FACP, FACE, FNLA. “We are delighted to host this esteemed delegation of Chinese endocrinologists and look forward to an exciting week of information sharing.”

Along with China’s emerging economy has come a heightened awareness of disorders and illnesses of the endocrine system such as hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, osteoporosis and obesity. Of particular concern is the alarming increase in the rate of diabetes cases among the Chinese population. As part of their strategy to improve diagnosis, treatment and management of endocrine diseases, The Chinese Endocrine Society is looking to the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) as the key organization of clinical endocrinologists to assist in growing this medical specialty throughout their nation.

Along with the information provided at the 21st Annual Scientific and Clinical Congress, AACE will provide its visitors from China with examples of clinical best practices and access to research and educational resources. Of particular interest to the Chinese delegation is the structure and operation of AACE itself and the AACE guidelines and recommendations for practice.

Dr. Quang Ning, President of the Chinese Society of Endocrinology (CSE) noted, “We welcome the opportunity to participate in a joint meeting with AACE as a demonstration of the Chinese clinicians’ and scientists’ desire to expand collaboration and exchange with the whole world endocrine community and improve the standard of care in our country.”

Treatment and prevention of endocrine conditions, especially obesity and diabetes, is a worldwide effort, and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists is a leader in enhancing the ability of its members around the world to provide the highest quality of patient care. While this is the first visit of an endocrinologist group from China, AACE has strong and growing support in the international endocrine community, and the AACE Annual Scientific and Clinical Congress has long been the destination of clinical endocrinologists from across the globe. In attendance this year will be 40 representatives from India and more than 30 each from Nigeria and the Philippines, plus large contingencies from Canada (23), United Arab Emirates (15), Mexico and Ecuador (11 each), Qatar and Romania (9 each) and Saudi Arabia (8), as well as several members from the United Kingdom. In total, physicians from at least 43 countries will be attending the meeting.

Dr. Handelsman indicated that during the meeting AACE will also be holding a special joint scientific session with the Sociedad Mexicana de Nutricion y Endocrinologia (SMNE).
