“The diversity of this list points to the many paths to career bliss,” says Heidi Golledge CEO and co-founder of CareerBliss. “If you find that your current job is not satisfying, it is important to figure out why. If you love the work, but not the company or coworkers, the best solution would be to find a better place to do that work. If you like your coworkers and the company, but not the work, find a way to change roles in the company.”

CareerBliss’ Happiest Companies in America is comprised of jobs in various industries ranging from technology to construction, and it reveals that company culture often defines career happiness. For example, software quality assurance engineers typically make between $90k and $100k in salary and are not responsible for building out new web design, but managing and overseeing corrections and potential bugs on a platform. Many of the employees in this field noted they were especially happy with the way they worked on a daily basis, as well as with their company environment and their co-workers.

Ranking just below software quality assurance engineers are executive chefs.

“What was surprising here, is that although growth opportunity ranked lower in our analysis, these employees truly love what they do on a daily basis and are passionate about creating culinary masterpieces,” says Matt Miller, CTO and co-founder of Careerbliss. “In turn, employees in this job love of what they do so much, that although factors such as growth opportunities rated lower, the love of their daily tasks boosted this job on the CareerBliss Happiest Jobs list.”

“It is clear from our data that company culture is essential for work happiness,” says Golledge. “This is why CareerBliss continues to work to develop the tools needed to empower employees to understand what drives their happiness.”

Methodology:

The CareerBliss data evaluates key factors that affect work happiness including one’s relationship with his boss and co-workers, his work environment, job resources, compensation, growth opportunities, company culture, company reputation, daily tasks, and job control over work performed on a daily basis. The data accounts for how an employee values each factor as well as how important that factor is to the employee’s overall happiness. Each review is given an average score indicating where the company places between one and five. All assessments were derived from February 1, 2011 through January 31, 2012. CareerBliss assessed a total of 100,467 employee reviews. A minimum of 50 employee reviews was required to be considered for CareerBliss’ Top 10 Happiest Jobs in America. Executive level jobs were excluded for this study.

* Bliss Rating: Overall job happiness score assigned by employees. Bliss Rating is derived from company reviews, which evaluate each of the key factors that contribute to the overall happiness in the workplace.
