DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Fertility Specialists of Texas today announced the first successful pregnancy in the Dallas/Fort Worth area through the fertility treatment commonly known as “egg freezing.” This medical milestone provides further evidence that egg freezing can greatly benefit women affected by cancer who want to preserve their fertility prior to chemotherapy and women who do not want to create excessive numbers of embryos they may not use. Since the human egg is the largest cell in the body and is composed mostly of water, the formation of ice during freezing can disrupt the egg’s internal microscopic contents and its outer membrane. Human sperm and embryos have been successfully frozen for several decades, but human eggs did not survive freezing until recent technology was developed. The freezing technique, known as vitrification, can preserve a woman's eggs indefinitely.
