Teaching About the Natural World From Inside the Classroom

ARLINGTON, Va.--()--When it’s just not possible to take students outdoors to learn about Earth science, teachers can bring the natural world indoors with the help of Bringing Outdoor Science In: Thrifty Classroom Lessons. Clearly organized and easy to use, this helpful and adaptable guide for teachers of elementary and middle school students offers more than 50 science lessons in six units:

  • Greening the school
  • Insects
  • Plants
  • Rocks and soils
  • Earth’s water
  • In the sky (covering weather, the solar system, and air pollution)

Bringing Outdoor Science In is a follow-up to the bestseller Outdoor Science: A Practical Guide. Formatted like its predecessor, author Steve Rich’s newest book includes ready-to-teach lessons with objectives, materials lists, procedures, ideas for modifying the lessons for different grade levels, discussion questions, and ”next steps.” Almost all the needed materials are inexpensive or even free (such as leaves and rocks). And if the class does get the chance to venture outdoors, the lessons will work well there, too.

Bringing Outdoor Science In helps teachers enrich students’ environmental knowledge and introduce them to everything from bug zoos to the Sun and stars without ever needing to put on a jacket.
