Shared Spectrum Company Collaborates with InterDigital on TV White Space Sensing Demonstration at Mobile World Congress

Technology Improves Quality of Service and Spectrum Access for Wireless Devices

Mobile World Congress 2012

VIENNA, Va.--()--Shared Spectrum Company (SSC), the leading innovator of dynamic spectrum access and cognitive radio technology software solutions, today announced that its Spectrum Sensing Toolbox (SST) has been integrated into InterDigital’s Dynamic Spectrum Management demonstration system. The companies will be demonstrating the solution at the Mobile World Congress 2012 in Barcelona.

The SST is an innovative software package that enables highly precise radio frequency sensing by wireless devices operating in the TV White Spaces (TVWS) and other spectrum bands. The SST helps these wireless devices access more spectrum and improve quality of service by accurately detecting wireless microphones, TV transmitters and other emitters that may cause interference. SST-enabled TVWS devices can operate as stand-alone, sensing-only devices in accordance with the FCC’s rules or to increase performance of database-connected systems.

SSC is introducing its first commercial product with the SST software package after over a decade of developing and testing dynamic spectrum access (DSA)-enabled spectrum sharing in harsh RF environments for the U.S. military.

“The use of sensing will greatly enhance the rollout of TV White Space devices by ensuring that users of this spectrum access frequencies without being subject to interference from other users,” said Thomas Stroup, CEO of SSC. “As devices proliferate and change location, sensing will enable sharing not only with each other, but also with existing users of the band, including wireless microphones. Sensing also will ensure selection of the best possible frequencies by identifying other sources of interference, such as man-made noise.”

“We see sensing as an essential technology for dynamic spectrum management and a necessary enabler for the efficient use of underutilized spectrum bands such as TVWS. Sensing provides both a means to detect and mitigate interference and to foster co-existence with other systems,” said Narayan Menon, Vice President of Research and Development, InterDigital.
