SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--MHL, LLC, the entity responsible for administering the MHL Consortium and the adoption, licensing and promotion of the MHL™ (Mobile High-Definition Link) specification, today announced that more than 50 million MHL products were shipped globally in 2011. Highlighting the widespread adoption of the standard, the MHL Consortium now has more than 90 global licensees representing some of today’s leading industries, including consumer electronics, mobile, home theater, automotive and gaming.
MHL technology is an HD audio and video wired connectivity standard that enables a mobile device with MHL technology to deliver 1080p uncompressed video with up to eight channels of digital audio. MHL-enabled DTVs and displays also provide power back to the mobile device when connected, ensuring that the phone battery is charged and ready to use.
“With so much media trapped on different connected devices in the home today, consumers are looking for a simple way to quickly share a photo, movie or song with other family members,” said Colin Dixon, senior partner, The Diffusion Group. “It’s exciting to see so many vendors moving to embrace MHL technology because it provides that simple solution.”
Key features of MHL technology include:
- Uncompressed 1080p HD video and 7.1 digital audio to the big screen
- No latency — Ideal for gaming
- TV charges the connected device
- TV remote controls playback
- Only five wires
- Uses existing and popular connectors
- Content protection using HDCP
Founded by Nokia, Samsung, Silicon Image, Sony and Toshiba, the MHL Consortium is focused on continuing to grow the MHL product ecosystem and to establish the technology as the de facto standard of choice for wired connectivity for mobile devices. Aside from traditional consumer electronic devices such as tablets, smartphones and DTVs, MHL adopters have also designed the technology into automotive infotainment systems, AV receivers, streaming media sticks and more, which provide new growth opportunities.
“Since the release of our specification in 2010, MHL Consortium membership has grown five-fold, with OEMs designing and releasing new products at a steady pace,” said Tim Wong, president of MHL, LLC. “In 2012, it’s my expectation that consumers will see even more exciting and innovative products that we hope will enrich their lives.”
MHL technology demonstrations will be shown at Mobile World Congress from February 27 — March 1, 2012 at the Fira de Barcelona in Barcelona, Spain. The MHL Consortium’s booth will be located in Hall 2, No. 2C06. To schedule a press meeting, please contact: info@mhltech.org.
