TOKYO & NEW YORK--()--Kokoro: The Heart of Japan public symposium and choral concert will be held on Tuesday, March 6, 2012, (7:00 to 9:30 pm) at Merkin Concert Hall of the Kaufman Center (129 West 67th St.) in New York City on the first anniversary of the March 2011 disaster.

The magnitude-9.0 Great East Japan Earthquake devastated northern Japan and caused one of the worst nuclear accidents in human history. Kokoro will be an opportunity to reflect on Japan's response to the disaster, with reference to aspects of Japan's traditional culture, particularly haiku, that offer deep insights into the emotional experience of the survivors.

  • Madoka Mayuzumi, one of Japan's leading contemporary haiku poets, will elucidate what the haiku form reveals about the values that permeate Japan's culture.
  • Columbia University's Japan specialists Paul Anderer, Chris Hill, and Kay Shimizu—along with haiku translator Hiroaki Sato and art education expert Raja Adal—will join Mayuzumi in discussing the unique and universal aspects of Japanese society.
  • The lecture and symposium will be followed by a choral concert featuring the world premiere of "And Then, Spring," a song for the people of Fukushima—a collaborative benefit project by Mayuzumi and Akira Senju, an award-winning composer of operatic and symphonic works as well as TV, film, and commercial theme songs.

Kokoro: The Heart of Japan is being hosted by the Tokyo Foundation in collaboration with the Weatherhead East Asian Institute of Columbia University. Support also comes from the Donald Keene Center of Japanese Culture, Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of New York, Nippon Club, Japan Choral Harmony, and Men's Glee Club of New York.
