Survey by Panlogic Finds 65% of Businesses Struggle to Define Web and Digital Requirements

LONDON--()--Panlogic, an independent, strategic digital consultancy, today launches findings from its research into the approach of companies to digital development.

The key findings of the report are:

  • 65% of businesses struggle to define web and digital requirements
  • 70% of survey respondents identify significant variations in price between their suppliers
  • 41% of those surveyed are concerned that their digital strategy is not fit-for-purpose
  • 30% of businesses have low standards of expectation about their digital delivery process
  • The majority of activities in all verticals have been project, rather than strategically, driven
  • Short term horizons and demands for a quick ROI from digital efforts are damaging long term business planning

The results clearly show that there is a lack of digital strategic planning and a focus on tactical delivery leading to a proliferation of projects. The existence and proliferation of multiple projects outside of a clear strategic framework creates inherent risk around project duplication, complex transactional interfaces and ongoing supplier costs. Even if projects meet expedient business objectives they are delivered with inherent inefficiency.

Also illustrated was that whilst ROI is a business imperative for investment, the underlying data suggests that some of the experiences when achieving these financial objectives have a high cost in terms of client experience. Timeline, quality, supplier relationships and budget were less than satisfactory in terms of project delivery; whilst overall client satisfaction at 30% suggests that we have low standards of expectation about the delivery process.

The conclusion of the study is that universally respondents agreed that the combination of experiences to date, changing internal needs and the complexity of requirements do point to the need for independent and neutral digital strategy expertise.

Panlogic’s research into Digital Engineering will be launched today at NESTA in London, where it is hosting a roundtable discussion and networking event to launch its survey “A new approach to digital delivery”.

William Makower, Founder of Panlogic said:

“We believe Digital Engineering provides the solution to the difficulties businesses face. Digital Engineering separates the specification and definition of requirement from the technical development. This approach mirrors that of the construction industry where the planning and surveying functions are separated from the build.”

“The responses from our survey agree with this thinking.”
