Research and Markets: Royal Entomological Society Book of British Insects

DUBLIN--()--Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/07a690/royal_entomologica) has announced the addition of John Wiley and Sons Ltd's new book "Royal Entomological Society Book of British Insects" to their offering.

There is a clear need for a comprehensive guide to all the British insect groups, well illustrated with photos in order to appeal to the layman, but also with sufficient detailed information to satisfy the professional entomologist. At present there are only general books about British insects such as the Collins Field Guides, or else the specialised works that concentrate on small groups such as the Handbooks produced by the Royal Entomological Society. There are also several books about the general biology, ecology and physiology of insects, but there is no systematic account of all groups in one volume.

This book will therefore be a systematic review of the 27 orders of British insects, with information on the classification, numbers of species, overall biology and importance of all 500 families, including further references for detailed identification and so on. As far as possible each family will be illustrated by at least one colour photo, including juvenile stages where feasible. Any economic importance and conservation status of major components of each family will be described, but the overall aim is to provide a comprehensive and balanced overview of all groups.

This book is the only modern systematic account of all 558 families of British insects, covering not just the large and familiar groups that are included in popular books, but even the smallest and least known. It is beautifully illustrated throughout in full colour with photographs by experienced wildlife photographers to show the range of diversity, both morphological and behavioural, among the 24,000 species.

All of the 6,000 genera of British insects are listed and indexed, along with all the family names and higher groups. There is a summary of the classification, biology and economic importance of each family together with further references for detailed identification. All species currently subject to legal protection in the United Kingdom are also listed.

This is a key reference work for serious students of entomology and amateur entomologists, as well as for professionals who need a comprehensive source of information about the insect groups of the British Isles they may be less familiar with.

Author:

Peter Barnard has enjoyed a lifetimes fascination with insects since early childhood. He carried out taxonomic research on several insect groups for over 30 years at London's Natural History Museum, where he edited the book Identifying British Insects and Arachnids (1999). In 2007 he was appointed Director of Science at the Royal Entomological Society, becoming the first full-time entomologist to be employed by the Society since its inception in 1833.
