TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Towers Watson Data Services has released its 2011 General Industry Supervisory and Middle Management Compensation Survey Report - Canada. The data are based on the responses of 198 organizations encompassing 663 locations employing 15,803 incumbents.
Bonus/variable pay program trends
Bonus and/or other cash compensation payments for supervisory and middle management personnel averaged 13.4% for all salary levels combined. The percentage of supervisors/middle managers receiving a short-term incentive award varied significantly by salary, ranging from a high of 70.9% of those earning $125,000 or more to a low of 42% of those earning less than $50,000. Bonus payments varied by salary level as well, ranging from a high of 18.1% of salary for those earning $125,000 or more to a low of 6.8% of salary for those earning less than $50,000.
The percentage of supervisors/middle managers receiving short-term incentive payments also varied significantly by industry sector. The average percentage of employees receiving such payments ranged from a high of 86% in the utilities and energy sector to a low of 45.5% in high tech. There were slight industry differences in average payment levels, with a high of 19% of salary in the high tech group.
There were also slight regional differences in the data. Ontario had the highest percentage of supervisors and middle managers receiving short-term incentive payments at 63.4%, with an average bonus payment of 13.1% of salary. The Atlantic Provinces had the lowest percentage of employees receiving such payments at 52.5%, and the lowest average bonus payments of 10.4% of salary.
More than half (64.1%) of the participating organizations have formally established bonus targets. In organizations with established bonus targets, 84.8% of supervisors/middle managers received a bonus payment, while only 5.6% received a bonus in organizations without formal targets. Employees received awards averaging 13.4% of salary where targets were established and 11.8% of salary in organizations without formal targets.
