The teachers and students from the 20 plus NVS Schools in India who are participating in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People pilot program are from small villages within 300 miles of New Delhi. Each school has approximately 500 students, 35 teachers and 35 staff members. Curriculum is taught in both English and Hindi. Nine of the 20 schools were the first to participate in The 7 Habits training, with 20 teachers from each school being trained. By the end of June, 2011, these 180 teachers taught other teachers and staff at their schools, who then taught their students and integrated The 7 Habits in their curriculum. The remaining 11 schools recently completed their training.

To date, approximately 500 NVS teachers have been trained in The 7 Habits training. Additionally, more than 15,000 teachers from government schools from the States of Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra in India have received The 7 Habits training in their own languages of Hindi and Marathi.

M.S. Khanna, Joint Commissioner, NVS Schools, said, “We are very happy with the effectiveness of The 7 Habits training and would definitely look at taking this to more teachers and students in our schools across the country. I thank and congratulate the Franklin Covey team in India.”

Lavleen Raheja, Chairman and CEO, Franklin Covey India, said, “The 7 Habits training has been a great success with NVS teachers with them recommending it for all schools across the country now. These teachers have called The 7 Habits journey the best initiative ever taken by the NVS organization for them. They are very excited to take this to students in the near future.”

Sean Covey, Education Practice Leader, Franklin Covey Co., said, “We are thrilled that NVS Schools in India are piloting The 7 Habits training. This signifies the commitment of the Indian Government to ensure that these children have an opportunity to receive a quality education and to develop the necessary skills that will prepare them to become 21st century leaders in their schools, families, businesses, communities and throughout India. We are honored to work with our Franklin Covey partner in India to help these students to realize this vision and we are thrilled with the positive feedback and the extraordinary results which are occurring.”

About The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

The content within The 7 Habits training is directly from The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, which was written by Stephen Covey in 1989 and has sold more than 20 million copies and has been published in 40 languages worldwide. The principles in the book have guided corporate and government boardroom decisions for years and are now being used to inspire young students of elementary school age to develop the skills and self-confidence to lead their lives and succeed in the 21st century.

The 7 Habits training integrates the principles of personal leadership and effectiveness in everyday, age-appropriate language into the core subjects and curriculum of an elementary school. It is a holistic school-wide experience for teachers and students and creates a common language and culture within the school built on proven principle-based leadership skills found in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

The process is implemented as follows:

  • The staff (teachers) identifies a vision of the outcomes they want for their school.
  • Teachers learn The 7 Habits and then act as role-model leaders.
  • Teachers are taught how to pervasively build The 7 Habits and other key leadership tools into school culture and curricula in order to effectively teach the timeless principles to students.
  • The school’s teachers and students utilize a number of tools, including Franklin Covey consultants to help them implement and reinforce the process year after year.
