NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Haier, a leading provider of home appliances and electronics, continues the efforts of the “Smarter Life, Better Planet” campaign through a new Haier Virtual Food Drive to support the Food Bank For New York City. As part of the program, Haier is encouraging consumers to support the Food Bank's Community Kitchen by providing a $1 to $1 match for every dollar up to $4,000 between Dec. 6, 2011 and Jan. 31, 2012. Participants commit to making improvements in everyday life to make a positive impact on the community, environment and in the lives of others.
“It is important for Haier to continue our commitment to the Food Bank For New York City which we began in August through an employee volunteer effort. Through this program we are using the spotlight of the International CES to give consumers the chance to take decisive action to contribute to the greater good and reduce hunger in America,” said Shariff Kan, President of Haier America.
Three million New Yorkers are struggling to put food on the table. Every dollar donated helps the Food Bank provide 5 nutritious meals for New Yorkers in need. To take the pledge, which is part of Haier’s “Smarter Life, Better Planet” corporate social responsibility campaign, simply visit the Haier Virtual Food Drive page and follow the steps to make a donation. Haier also invites pledge-takers to share their own stories and ideas via the “Smarter Life, Better Planet” Facebook page. The page showcases ways Americans can make more forward thinking choices in their daily lives, and educates people about how to provide service to others and their communities through acts of upstanding citizenry.
Haier continues the work with the Food Bank For New York City which began in August, as part of the Clean Start Project. The program was the launch of its first employee volunteer program during which Haier employees from New York City as well as New Jersey prepared and served food at the Food Bank's Community Kitchen & Food Pantry in Harlem over the course of the month.
"At a time when one New Yorker in five relies on the Food Bank For New York City's programs and services, we are very pleased to partner with Haier whose donation will help bring families together this holiday season," said Margarette Purvis, President & CEO, Food Bank For New York City. "We commend Haier for encouraging Americans to support their communities and for providing the tools they need to help others."
Haier will showcase the “Smarter Life, Better Planet” program at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas from Jan. 10-13, 2012, in addition to new product innovations. Attendees are invited to take the pledge in-person at the Haier booth or remotely. Haier’s high-definition TVs will display a live stream of the Virtual Food Drive page.

About the Food Bank For New York City
Food Bank For New York City recognizes 28 years as the city’s major hunger-relief organization working to end food poverty throughout the five boroughs. As the city’s hub for integrated food poverty assistance, the Food Bank tackles the hunger issue on three fronts — food distribution, income support and nutrition education — all strategically guided by its research. Through its network of community-based member programs citywide, the Food Bank helps provide 400,000 free meals a day for New Yorkers in need. The Food Bank’s hands-on nutrition education program in the public schools reaches thousands of children, teens and adults. Income support services including food stamps, free tax assistance for the working poor and the Earned Income Tax Credit put millions of dollars back in the pockets of low-income New Yorkers, helping them to achieve greater dignity and independence. 94% of donations go directly toward food distribution, acquisition and programs in all five boroughs of New York City.
