BUENOS AIRES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
- Alcatel Lucent and DiBcom entered into a new partnership in 2011, this time for radio planning for ISDB-T networks in South America, promoting their technologies and working methods through the Argentinean broadcasting network study project.
- These tools demonstrate how the growth and penetration of broadcast networks can be increased and accelerated thanks to innovative technologies, mainly in terms of receivers (Set-Top-Boxes)
The development of a modern digital broadcasting network is a complex project that requires work using complementary skill sets, skirting the line between telecommunications, radio planning and digital signal processing, which must, of course, be carried out in accordance with budgetary and planning constraints.
This draws on studies by Alcatel-Lucent in Argentina, where one of the tasks was to conduct a true study of ISDB-T broadcast network coverage in Buenos Aires, in order to confirm the predictions made by computer. It represents a significant challenge, because the findings will determine the need to install Gap Fillers in addition to existing transmitters, and the number required.
Alcatel-Lucent opted for reception technologies developed by DiBcom for its automotive industry customers. These receivers correct signal distortion caused by speed (the Doppler effect) and compensate for signal losses caused by multiple trajectories.
This method of collecting data in motion has enabled a quick and efficient sweep of an area of several square miles in record time, thereby saving months of work on the project.
Among other things, DiBcom solutions give a parallel measurement of the coverage that would be reached if we used technology with antenna diversity in receivers. The results show a significant gain, particularly in areas where the received signal level is weak.
This technology, known as diversity, which has been used for a long time in the automotive sector, is a little less well known in “indoor” applications for the general public. Aware of the gains provided by diversity, DiBcom has developed electronic circuits specially adapted to receivers for the general public, putting into effect its experience and know-how acquired in the automotive industry. Firstly, these technologies enable the easy and fast installation of the STB with a portable antenna inside the viewer's house or apartment, and secondly they reduce installation costs for broadcasting networks, avoiding the use of many Gap Fillers.
"We were delighted to have the opportunity to work with Alcatel-Lucent on the Argentina case. The data collected clearly shows that we can optimize a network, save time in rolling out a modern network and cut costs, all thanks to innovative receivers and the know-how of the broadcaster and its partners. And all this applies to the entire South American continent, which is currently adopting DTT", says a satisfied Yannick Levy.
