Second Lady Jill Biden and Maryland Gov. O’Malley Offer Solutions to End Hunger

WASHINGTON--()--Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, and Governor Martin O’Malley will address a gathering of Bread for the World, Bread for the World Institute, and Alliance to End Hunger members in New York on Nov. 17.

“We are delighted that Dr. Biden and Gov. O’Malley have agreed to address Bread for the World members during our fall event,” said Rev. Beckmann, president of the three affiliated organizations. “We can learn a lot from their successes in education and fighting hunger and poverty, especially at a time when we need to protect vital programs that help the most vulnerable people in our society.”

Dr. Jill Biden recently led a bipartisan mission to the Horn of Africa and witnessed the devastating impact of hunger. “We must confront the broader challenge of food insecurity that leaves so many people vulnerable to droughts like this one,” she wrote recently in USA Today. “The goal of our aid is simple: to help create the conditions where such aid is no longer needed. That, ultimately, is how we can help prevent the kind of suffering we see in Somalia today.”

Gov. Martin O’Malley made a commitment to end childhood hunger in his state and has kept his administration focused on this priority. More than 200,000 Maryland children don’t have ready or reliable access to the food they need to lead healthy, active lives. “These days, many people are aware of hunger in our communities,” the governor said. “What surprises them is that the problem can be effectively addressed on a broad scale.”
