NCKU Students’ Intelligent Space Design Wins National Competition

TAINAN, Taiwan--()--Imagine walking into a room, the light automatically turns on when you simply think about lighting it up. Three doctoral students from the Department of Architecture at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, south Taiwan, have designed an intelligent living space, where dreams become reality with simple thoughts.

Architecture students Tian-Yu Wu, Yang-Ting Shen and Cheng-An Pan have won gold award and a prize of NT$200,000 in the 2011 Intelligent Living Space Scenario Design Competition, organized by the Architecture and Building Research Institute, Ministry of the Interior, for a design called Spatial MUSE.

Spatial MUSE is a circular green building ideally to be located in Tainan’s An-Nan District and Shun-Liao Redevelopment District. It can turn on lights, open the windows or even release a fragrant substance called phytoncid when people give instructions in their heads.

Other unique features include infrared ray which can detect human heartbeat, temperature and postures, and image recognition technology which can identify people’s facial expression and body movements.

In the competition, Wu, Shen and Pan have captured the attention of the judges and won acclaim from the audience as they moved a device for one meter with brain waves.

In the future, according to these three young architects, everyone can create their utopias without even using brain waves. “A smart and interactive living space won’t be a dream anymore, when the building makes decisions for us by automatically reacting to our physical conditions and emotions,” Wu said.

Hwung-Hweng Hwung, president of National Cheng Kung University, commented, “It’s a crazy but excellent idea. I often feel an urge to fly when hiking on a mountain, so perhaps one day my fantasy will come true.”

The winning students will receive the award and cash prize in an awarding ceremony to be held in Taipei on Nov. 5.

The Intelligent Living Space Scenario Design Competition is organized by the Architecture and Building Research Institute of Ministry of the Interior, to inspire students’ imagination and creativity. Some good ideas may provide references for future living technology development, improve the quality of life and boost the local industry’s competitiveness.
