X2VOL Video Contest Announces Winners

High School Students Win Scholarships for Videos Inspiring Volunteerism

DALLAS--()--Eric Lewis of Western Alamance High School in Elon, North Carolina won the top prize in the x2VOL Video Contest sponsored by intelliVOL—developers of the x2VOL volunteer tracking and reporting system for high schools. The contest awards scholarships to high school students who best convey the importance of community service through video.

Lewis’ winning video is a clever mix of chalkboard animation about each person’s role in supporting a healthy community. “If we would all picture ourselves in the place of any unfortunate person, I think we would all better understand why our service is important,” Lewis narrates in the video. “Communities are only sustained because of cooperation. And, if everyone on this planet were to help others, there would be a much smaller need for helping ourselves.”

Lewis will receive a $1,000 scholarship for his video on community service.

Jason Girouard of Tantasqua Regional High School in Fiskdale, Mass. and Solomon Shadrix of White Plains High School in Anniston, Ala. each will receive $500 scholarships for their entries. Girouard showed images from tornado-ravaged Western Massachusetts and how the combined efforts of volunteers saved labor and spread goodwill. “A warm heart is as important as a warm place to stay. Go out and volunteer,” encourages Girouard in his video message.

Shadrix mixed photographs with compelling messages reminding people to step beyond feeling sorry for others affected by tragedy and to get out and volunteer. His images of the terrorist bombing of the World Trade Center are a vivid reminder that communities heal by the personal gifts of time and caring.

Honorable mention goes to Troy Billett from New Tech High School @ Coppell near Dallas, Texas for his video collection of student interviews. One person he interviewed reminds us that community service gives perspective about the world. Billett’s subject points out that anyone can fall on unfortunate times. “You are in a position where you can actually help people instead of being the one that needs help,” said the student.

“We are impressed with the quality and creativity of the videos entered into the x2VOL Video Contest,” said Michele Pitman, intelliVOL CEO. “These young people have such a clear vision of how communities are strengthened by cooperation and generosity of spirit. It is an honor to showcase their work.”
