WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Disabled Veterans National Foundation has given $5,000 to the DAV ‘Veterans Relief Fund’ - Athens , GA.’
Since 2009, the Disabled American Veterans Ch. 92 Veterans Relief Fund has provided more than $28,000 in direct support to 74 veterans. The Veterans Relief Fund has provided assistance for funeral costs, utility payments, groceries, home repairs, rent/mortgage payments, gas cards and even the installation of a well for veterans in need.
“As a social worker with the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center - Athens Clinic, I can say that the Veterans Relief Fund has been a tremendous help to our Veterans,” said Dortheann Metzinger, Primary Care Social Worker at the Athens Clinic. “There are many agencies that provide for specific causes, but the Veterans Relief Fund has been able to help veterans that would not have received assistance from other agencies.”
The financial assistance through the Athens fund is administered by veteran volunteers who screen and counsel the veterans who apply for (and are in need of) the help. To date, more than 100 veterans in the Athens area have applied to the program for assistance and three quarters of those who sought help have received direct support.
“We are pleased to be able to support the DAV’s Athens Chapter as the assistance goes directly to support veterans,” said Precilla Wilkewitz, President of Disabled Veterans National Foundation. “For many of these veterans, help with a rent payment or a utility bill can mean a big difference in their lives.”
