SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--There are 165,000 Utahns with diabetes. Intermountain Healthcare employee RoLayne Young knows one personally. Her sister.
This year, Young was a cyclist for Team SelectHealth, riding in the American Diabetes Association’s annual Tour de Cure fundraising event.
One of Young’s twin sisters died from diabetes, the other is still fighting it. “For seven hours I’ll struggle today, like my sister struggles every day,” Young said before the event. “I ride for her.”
Though the 60-mile, seven-hour ride wasn’t easy, Young eventually made it to the finish line. “There were times that I wanted to stop,” she said. But the thought of her sister kept her going. “Seven hours in my sister’s shoes. She’s an example to me. She’s truly my hero.”
Young was one of 260 members of Team SelectHealth, many of whom have a similar story. This year, SelectHealth and its team raised $113,226.34 to benefit diabetes research and prevention.
