CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--InVivo Therapeutics (OTC/BB: NVIV) congratulates Robert S. Langer, Sc.D., InVivo co-founder and member of the Company’s Scientific Advisory Board, for his selection as the recipient of the 2011 Warren Alpert Foundation Prize. The Alpert Prize recognizes researchers for laboratory discoveries with dramatic promise to improve human health.
Dr. Langer, the David H. Koch Institute Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will share the award with another bioengineering pioneer, cardiac surgeon Dr. Alain F. Carpentier of Paris, in recognition of their extraordinary contributions to medicine.
Dr. Langer is the most cited engineer in history, having written nearly 1,130 articles and holding more than 800 issued or pending patents. Dr. Langer’s research has resulted in a suite of patents for InVivo, a company dedicated to the development of groundbreaking technologies for the treatment of spinal cord injuries.
“Dr. Langer is truly a trailblazer in modern medicine with a focus on basic science and engineering,” stated Frank Reynolds, CEO of InVivo Therapeutics. “His engineering advancements not only have the potential to benefit spinal cord injuries, but also many other unmet and poorly served medical conditions.”
The late Warren Alpert, a philanthropist dedicated to advancing biomedical research, established the Prize in 1987. To date, the Foundation has awarded more than $3 million to 39 individuals, seven of whom have also received a Nobel Prize. Dr. Langer and Dr. Carpentier will be honored at a symposium to be held October 6, 2011 at Harvard Medical School.
