Professor Karl-Heinz Kogel of the University of Gießen, Highlights Hessen's Expertise in Science and Attractiveness as a Business Location

NEW YORK--()--The German State of Hessen U.S. Office for Economic Development and the German Center for Research and Innovation (GCRI) are hosting a speaker panel on “Better Living through Science: Innovations in Plant Biotechnology” in cooperation with the New York Biotechnology Association (NYBA) on September 13, 2011, New York, NY.

One of Hessen’s leading experts, Professor Karl-Heinz Kogel, Head of the Department of Phytopathology, Institute of Phytopathology and Applied Zoology, Justus-Liebig-University Gießen, will present plant biology, its applications, and its potential future effects worldwide. The development of gluten-free wheat, for example, could bring hope to those suffering from celiac disease.

He will be joined by Dr. Rina Singh, Director of Policy, Science & Renewable Chemicals, Industrial Biotechnology and Environmental Section, Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) in Washington D.C. She will discuss bio-based innovations as a key research field to providing new solutions to the challenges faced by societies in the 21st century. As the world population nears seven billion people, biotech plays an increasing role in plant health and thereby, human food supplies.

Hessen is a well-known biotech region and business location in Europe and in the U.S. Frankfurt and the Wiesbaden-Darmstadt-Hanau Triangle are its most successful biotech clusters along with those in Marburg and Giessen. Hessen’s 225 biotech companies, employ 19,500, that generate EURO 5.2 billion in revenues (almost doubled from 2002 to 2010). Some companies located in the state are Aventis Pharma, Degussa, Fresenius and Merck, Biotest, B. Braun Biotech and Stada; plus 50 research institutions.

Hessen’s U.S. Office is part of Hessen Agentur GmbH, which provides cost-free support for companies looking to establish a subsidiary or partnerships in Hessen. The German Center for Research and Innovation is an ideal partner for Hessen, as it was created as a cornerstone of the German government’s initiative to internationalize science and research.

The discussion moderated by Dr. Nathan Tinker, Executive Director, NYBA, will be followed by Q&A and a reception.
