Northern Trust Strengthens Asset Management Team with Middle East Appointment

Kais Abbas joins as Head of Investment Business Development

LONDON--()--Northern Trust (Northern Trust, Nasdaq: NTRS) has added to its international asset management team with the appointment of Kais Abbas as head of investment business development for the Middle East.

Mr. Abbas reports to John Krieg, Northern Trust, managing director of asset management in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Consistent with the firm’s regional team focus and structure, Abbas is based in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, and supported by central teams in London and Chicago.

“The Middle East market is sophisticated and dynamic. It constitutes a key component of our strategy to continue to build our international business,” said Krieg. “Investing has become ever more challenging, in an environment of heightened, ongoing market volatility, expanding regulations and the introduction of new investment strategies. In order for us to truly understand the issues faced by our clients, and to continue to provide thoughtful investment solutions to our investors in the Middle East, it is important for us to have a presence in the region. Being a native speaker with over 10 years’ asset management and private banking experience, working with Middle East clients, and living in the region, makes Kais perfectly placed for the role.”

Abbas’ appointment follows the momentum of those of Jay Powell who joined in 2009 to develop UK asset management business; Gerard van Leusden and Arnaud Bizet, business development directors for The Netherlands, based in Amsterdam, who joined in 2010; and Kristina Ilar, head of business development for the Nordic region, based in Stockholm whose appointment was announced earlier in 2011.

Abbas joins from Robeco Group where he spent six years based in Bahrain as country manager for Kuwait and Qatar in addition to various general management responsibilities. Previously, he worked for the private banking unit of Ahli United Bank in London and Bahrain as a senior relationship manager. He attended Brunel University in the U.K. and holds an MBA from Cardiff University.
