Research and Markets: Uganda Telecommunications Report Q3 2011 - The Broadband Subscriber Forecast Anticipates Stronger Growth between 2013 and 2015

DUBLIN--()--Research and Markets(http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/8dd40b/uganda_telecommuni) has announced the addition of the "Uganda Telecommunications Report Q3 2011" report to their offering.

BMI's Q3 2011 update on Uganda's Telecommunications Market contains a revised five-year forecast that predicts how the country's mobile telephony sector will grow through to the end of 2015. The update also contains five-year forecasts that depict the development of Uganda's fixed-line, internet and broadband markets, although these forecasts remain generally unchanged this quarter. The one exception is the broadband subscriber forecast, which anticipates stronger growth between 2013 and 2015.

This quarter sees the introduction of a mobile ARPU forecast for Uganda. The forecast is based on historical ARPU data published by the sector's two largest mobile operators, MTN and Airtel, and is expressed in local currency, the Ugandan shilling. Examined as a market average, the mobile ARPU rate for Uganda fell by 28.3% in 2010 to reach UGX7,018 (US$2.99). The long-term prediction for Uganda's blended ARPU rates is one of gradual decline.

Recent developments of note in Uganda's telecoms sector include the news in March 2011 that Uganda's government planned to seize control of Libya's controlling stake in fixed-line incumbent operator UTL as part of a move to comply with UN sanctions freezing Libyan government assets abroad. Specifically, the government indicated that a new interim board would be appointed, as well as new management. UTL is one of the companies connected to the Libyan leader whose assets have been frozen internationally in accordance with the UN resolution 1973. However, in April 2011, Ugandan news agencies were reporting that the government had failed to take over management of UTL as it had earlier proclaimed; this would mean the company effectively remains in the hands of the embattled Libyan government of Muammar al- Qadhafi.

Companies Mentioned:

  • Telecom (UTL)
