SMUD Gives $150,000 Incentive Check for Building Energy Efficient Campus & Control Center

New headquarters also receives LEED Platinum plaque; reflects ISO commitment to the environment

FOLSOM, Calif.--()--Going green is getting the control center for the power grid a lot of recognition for its environmental commitment and cash to reinvest in additional energy savings. Not only is the California Independent System Operator Corporation (ISO) seeing energy cost savings every day through operation of its new Folsom headquarters, but the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) will hand the ISO a $150,000 incentive award check at its Board of Governors meeting tomorrow. The utility partnered with the transmission grid operator through its Savings by Design program, which encourages customers to make energy efficiency investments in their new buildings.

Savings by Design is a statewide program administered by the major utilities with financial incentives available to owners when their new building exceeds a minimum energy efficiency threshold (generally 10% better than CA Title 24 energy efficiency standards). The new ISO headquarters uses 33% less energy than the state energy code and 72% less than its previous leased headquarters.

SMUD Director Nancy Bui-Thompson and Assistant General Manager Paul Lau will present the ISO with an oversized check at its regularly scheduled ISO Board of Governors meeting Thursday, August 25, 2011. The event takes place at the new ISO headquarters, recently awarded the highest green building designation—Platinum—by the U.S. Green Building Council. It is one of the few Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum-certified buildings in the region. The LEED Platinum plaque just arrived and will be hung in the ISO energy education center. Media is invited to tour the energy smart building and see its many green features including a mini-solar farm and an employee community garden, which green thumbed-staff have nurtured into full harvest.
