National Geographic Publishes Official Books of the 9/11 Memorial this Fall

WASHINGTON--()--National Geographic has partnered with the National September 11 Memorial (9/11 Memorial) to offer readers two books to mark the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks this fall. The first, A PLACE OF REMEMBRANCE: Official Book of the National September 11 Memorial (National Geographic Books; ISBN 978-4262-0807-2; on sale Aug. 9, 2011; $19.95), is written by National September 11 Memorial & Museum staff members Allison Blais and Lynn Rasic with a foreword by New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, chairman of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. The afterword is by Joe Daniels, president and CEO of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. The book honors those who were lost, celebrates the spirit of hope and tells the emotional story behind the creation of the 9/11 Memorial, which will open at the World Trade Center site in New York in September. The book is the only official companion volume to the memorial, and a portion of the proceeds from the book will be used to support the memorial. A special insert section lists the names of the nearly 3,000 victims and the exact location of where each name is inscribed on the memorial. In this way, the book becomes a means of visiting the memorial and participating in remembering the day of the attacks, no matter where one is located. A short YouTube video narrated by Daily Show host Jon Stewart showcases images from the book.

The second book entitled, MEMORY REMAINS: 9/11 Artifacts at Hangar 17 (National Geographic Books; ISBN 978-1-4262-0833-1; Aug. 16, 2011; $50 hardcover) is the only complete photographic record of Hangar 17. It is a searing testimony to the violence of 9/11 and the human toll of those unspeakable acts of destruction. Complementing photographer Francesc Torres’ images that demonstrate how time and the world stopped on 9/11 are essays by several commentators, including Newsweek magazine writer and editor Jerry Adler, who tells the story of Hangar 17 and the efforts to conserve and analyze the remains, Clifford Chanin, acting director of education and senior program advisor at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, who writes about the memories and meaning of the artifacts. Torres also provides an essay on the experience of photographing the objects. The foreword to the book is penned by Joe Daniels, CEO and president of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum; Alice M. Greenwald, director of the National September 11 Memorial Museum; and Chris Ward, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

MEMORY REMAINS is the official book companion to photographic exhibitions opening in several cities later this year to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11. They include New York, at the International Center for Photography; London, at the Imperial War Museum; Madrid, at the Palacio de Cibeles; and Barcelona, at the Centre de Cultura ContemporĂ nia.
