Air Quality Tests from Macro Plastics Fire Reveal Normal Background Levels of Air Pollutants

FAIRFIELD, Calif.--()--The fire that began yesterday afternoon outside of the Macro Plastics manufacturing plant in Fairfield, California was extinguished by 11 p.m. last night. The Fairfield fire fighters did not have to post a watch overnight and by midnight the facility was turned back over to Macro Plastics.

“No structures were affected and today Macro Plastics is fully operational,” stated Jeff Mitchell, VP of Operations. “We want to thank the local fire agencies for their quick response and continued support.”

Company officials confirmed initial reports released by fire officials regarding the cause of the fire being accidental. Macro Plastics employees were working outside in the storage yard performing maintenance near stacks of plastic containers.

“Based on reports from numerous agencies, initial research indicates that the effect to the atmosphere or environment by the fire is equivalent to a grass or wildfire,” stated Terry Schmidtbauer, Environmental Health Manager for Solano County.

According to the Bay Area Quality Management District, air quality samples taken near the fire revealed normal background levels of air pollutants in neighborhoods most likely to be impacted. Additionally, Bay Area and Sacramento air quality monitoring stations did not pick up elevated levels of particulates.
