TAINAN, Taiwan--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A group of 23 students from Tsinghua University (THU), Beijing, and National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, will tutor approximately 50 children at an aboriginal elementary school in Pingtung from August 1st to 6th.
After arriving in Tainan on July 24th, 10 THU students joined 23 NCKU students in the opening ceremony on the 25th. They will altogether receive prior training and get to know one another in the following week before arriving at Feng Lin Elementary School.
“This service learning program, which began in 2007, has strengthened the relationship between THU and NCKU,” said Vice President Huey-Jen Su in the opening ceremony. “To bring us closer, I look forward to seeing students from THU studying at NCKU in the near future.”
According to Thomas Liu, the leader of the THU student team, the climate and food in Southern Tainan are welcoming and delicious and the people are especially friendly. Liu expects to learn the cultural differences and the volunteer experiences from his newly-acquainted peers during the trip in Taiwan.
In addition, Peggy Tu, a third-year student in the Department of Environmental Engineering at NCKU, also revealed an eagerness to teach the elementary school kids the wonders of science while she interacts with the students from mainland China.
During their stay at the elementary school, the students will coach the kids in a series of scientific activities, visit their homes and help rebuild a fallen wall.
