--(BUSINESS WIRE)--WHAT: Press conference being held today (Friday, July 22, 2011) to discuss the $15.5 million legal settlement paid today by Lee’s Summit, Missouri, to Theodore W. White, Jr.
White will share a formal statement during the press conference. He and his attorneys will then be available to answer questions from the media.
WHO & WHAT: In 1998, White was arrested on false charges of child molestation against his then stepdaughter, charges made worse by the fact that the investigating officer was secretly involved romantically with White’s then wife (the mother of the stepdaughter). White was convicted of the charges in 1999, but he fled to Costa Rica to avoid imprisonment one week later. He was later captured and imprisoned in Costa Rica for more than five months before being extradited to the United States and incarcerated in three separate state penal institutions in Missouri for a total of more than five years.
WHY: After additional evidence came to light, his earlier conviction was overturned and White was retried on two additional occasions, the last trial ending in his acquittal in 2005. White then brought a civil suit against the city of Lee’s Summit, its Police Department, several former Lee’s Summit law enforcement officers, and his former wife, seeking damages for serious injuries and illnesses suffered by White during his period of wrongful incarceration.
WHEN & WHERE: The press conference will be held today (Friday, July 22, 2011) at 2 p.m. (CDT) at the Intercontinental Kansas City at the Plaza (401 Ward Parkway in Kansas City, Missouri).
HOW: The city of Lee’s Summit opted to reach an out-of-court settlement with White.
